Fjoneferja in Nissedal, and Paradisbukta - Norway's smallest cable ferry

The Fjoneferja in Nissedal is a cable ferry that crosses Lake Nisser and provides a road connection between Fjone on the west side and Kyrkjebygda on the east side. It is Norway's smallest cable ferry and can only carry three cars at a time. A short walk through the forest from the ferry landing at Fjone is a beautiful sandy beach called Paradisbukta. This post describes the ferry and the beach.

The ferry is a vintage boat that is still in operation. It runs once an hour in both directions over the 500-meter stretch between the east and west sides of the 35-km-long Nisser. It can carry up to three cars or one bus or truck. If you are staying on the east side of Nisser, a trip on the Fjoneferja and a visit to Paradisbukta can be an enjoyable day trip. It is then worth leaving your car in the parking lot at the ferry landing.

Cars drive onto the ferry on the east side of Nisser to be transported across to Fjone. Today's ferry MF "Nissen" is from 1976, but there has been a cable ferry here since 1947 with previous versions of "Nissen". For a long time it only operated in the summer months, but in 2017 it was decided that it would operate all year round. However, the ferry is suspended when ice forms on the water.

On the Fjonesiden side you will find Fjonesundet Café and Ferry. It has room for 40 guests and has the right to sell alcohol. In the summer there is room for 20 guests under the covered terrace. It is a pleasant place to stay if you have to wait for a free seat on the ferry.

The peninsula on which the ferry port on the west side is located has several beaches. The most popular is called Paradisbukta. To get there, you have to walk for about 5 minutes through the forest. You start on a path right next to the café and continue on a forest road just behind.

On the west side of Paradise Bay there are smooth rocky cliffs. If you continue along these, you will come to several smaller bays. You can use these if you want to be alone. On the east side of Paradise Bay there is also a bay with a sandy beach. Here there is a cabin right by the water, but you can use this beach too if you consider those who may be staying at the cabin.
