Nordiska akvarellmuseet in Skärhamn - art museum at the coast

On the island of Tjörn a little north of Gothenburg is a museum dedicated to paper and watercolor art. The museum is located in scenic surroundings. The museum was inaugurated in 2000 and was designed by the Danish architects Niels Bruun and Henrik Corfitsen. It has a permanent collection, but also its own summer exhibitions.

This year's (2023) exhibition is called "Animal Kingdom". It shows how animals, plants and insects have been used by artists over several hundred years.

The Nordic Watercolor Museum is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the area with 100,000 - 200,000 visitors each year. It has an area of 410 square meters.

In one of the departments, watercolors from the 17th and 18th centuries of animals, plants and insects are displayed.

In another, modern art is displayed.

In the picture below, the bush moves in a circle on the screen so that it gets a three-dimensional expression.

The museum has its own art workshop where children can paint with water colours.

The museum also has a richly equipped shop and is co-located with Restaurang Vatten, which has indoor and outdoor seating.

A rainy day is well suited for a visit to the Nordiska Akvarellmuseet. But the surroundings are worth a visit in themselves. Feel free to bring swimwear if the weather is nice.

Getting there: Search for "Nordiske Akvarellmuseet" on Goodle maps, or take off from the E6 towards Tjörn at Stenungsund a little north of Gothenburg. There are some parking spaces right outside the museum.
