Pilane sculpture park is located on the island of Tjörn a little north of Gothenburg. Here you will find works of art placed in a nature typical of Bohuslän. This is not an ordinary park, but a living cultural landscape with grazing sheep where the sculptures are placed in nature. Pilane is among the leading sculpture parks in Europe with works by, among others, the internationally leading Ai Weiwei.
Her sculptures "Roots" are a monument to the reckless deforestation of primeval forests.
Pilane was named one of the ten best cultural parks in Europe by the British Guardian in 2016.
The most eye-catching sculpture is "Anna" by the world-renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa.
The 14 meter high iconic sculpture of a young woman is located on a hill and can be seen from a long distance.
Changing light and the interaction with nature and the other sculptures give the sculpture different "faces" depending on where you are in the park.
One of Pilane's concepts is to present modern art in a prehistoric landscape.
The sculpture park in Pilane is constantly changing. Every year, new artists and works of art are allowed to enter.
A route has been created in the terrain of approx. 1.5 kilometers. You get to most of the artworks if you follow the gravel paths.
You can also follow some of the well-trodden paths that criss-cross the grazing landscape to get closer to the animals and nature.
To get all the way up to the artwork "Leap of Faith" by Maria Miesenberger, you have to climb a bit or follow prepared paths and stairs.
Pilane is close to the coast and from the highest points you get a good view of the archipelago beyond.
Pilane has historically been a place of residence and burial ground, but also a meeting place for people and cultures for centuries. Since 2007, sculpture exhibitions have been held there run by the Pilane Heritage Museum.
Pilane sculpture park is open seasonally from 13 May to 24 September every day from 09 - 19 (9-17 in September). The ticket price in 2023 is NOK 150 for adults and NOK 130 for children and pensioners.
