Fjällbacka - herring, murder and Ronja Røverdatter

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

The old fishing village of Fjällbacka is located a few kilometers south of Grebbestad on the west coast of Sweden in Norra Bohuslän.

The settlement is located close to the 76 meter high cliff called Vetteberget.

The town has many restaurants and shops. In the summer, there is a bustling nightlife.

Originally, it was herring fishing that provided the basis for livelihood here, but now tourism has become more important.

Internationally, Fjällbacka is probably best known today for the many best-selling crime books by Camilla Läkberg, but world star Ingrid Bergman was also connected to the place. She has been dedicated a small square at the foot of the Vetteberget cliff.

The souvenirs from Astrid Lindgren are due to the fact that certain scenes from Ronja Røverdatter were filmed in the narrow gorge in Vetteberget.

The gorge was named Kungsklyften after Oscar II visited it in 1886. It is only 100 meters from the wharf. The path there starts at Ingrid Bergmans Torg.

In the summer, this is a popular tourist destination. The gorge is made easily accessible by means of stairs.

It has been claimed that the scenes where Ronja and Bork jumped across the gap of hell from one side of the chasm to the other in the film Ronja Røverdatter were filmed here.

It is not true. The jumping scenes were filmed on a rooftop outside Stockholm, but some scenes where the robbers walk through a gorge were filmed in Kungsklyften.

But Kungsklyften in Fjällbacka is just as dramatic as Hell's Gap in the film.

At the end of the gorge there is a staircase leading up to the top of the cliff.

From here you get a view of the town and the surrounding archipelago.

On a hill on the north side of the town is the town's Neo-Gothic church. It is made from the area's red Bohus granite.

A few hundred meters from this, there is a hiking trail that leads over Vetteberget and up to the viewpoint at Kungsklyften.

The path goes through forest and on open rock terrain.

It is possible to take a round trip from the church over Vetteberget, down Kungsklyften and back through the center of the town.
