Most people know Kolsåstoppen in Bærum, and then you usually think of Søndre Kolsåstopp, which rises 342 meters above sea level. But there is also a Nordre Kolsåstopp. It is 45 meters higher, but far less well known. Both peaks can be climbed separately, but you can also take a round trip so that you get to see both peaks on one summit trip.

The summit tour described here starts at Hauger station on the Kolsås subway. Either take the subway or park your car near this station. Follow Høgåsveien from the subway station, but turn right to Kolsåslia after 100 metres. Follow Kolsåslia until you reach Høgåslia where you turn left. After a couple of hundred meters you reach the hiking trail to Søndre Kolsåstopp.

From here, just follow the blue marks and signs to Søndre Kolsåstopp. The first part of the route follows a wide gravel road, but eventually this turns into a narrower, steeper and more stony path.

On the steepest parts there are stairs with handrails. There are only a couple of places where you have to use your hands for a short while to get up. The trip up can be tiring, but is not dangerous or technically difficult, and the reward is great when you get up.

From the summit of Søndre Kolsåstopp, you continue towards the tall pole at the rear. There you will find blue marks on trees/stones and signs for Nordre Kolsåstopp. From here, just follow the markings and signs. The first part goes down on the backside of Søndre Kolsåstopp on the forest path.

After the descent you reach Sætertjern. Walk around the pond. On the other side you will find signs for Nordre Kolsåstopp and Gråmagan.

From Sætertjern you can see Nordre Kolsåstopp directly at the back. The path continues on the right side of the pond up towards the top.

If you want to make the trip a little longer, you can take a detour to Gråmagan before going up to Nordre Kolsåstopp. From there you get a great view of Dælivann and the Dæli nature reserve where the artists called Fleskumalerne worked (see blog post below).

From Sætertjern, follow the signs and blue markers in the direction of Nordre Kolsåstopp. You quickly come to a path in a steep rock pile, but after this there is a nice forest path up to the top.

The view from the summit of the Nordre Kolsåstopp is also a good reward. From here you can see much of Bærum and the archipelago in Indre Oslofjord.

If you look over the edge, you can also see Sætertjern. On the right in the picture below, you see Søndre Kolsåstopp with the tall mast on top.

The way down from Nordre Kolsåstopp is far easier to walk than the way up to Søndre Kolsåstopp. It is easy to find. Follow the blue markers and the signs to Stein Gård.

The last part of the descent to the guest car park at Stein Gård is on a gravel road in a cultural landscape. From the guest car park, follow Gamle Ringeriksvei down towards the valley. Take the second road on the right (after approx. 1 km). This is the Dæliveien that you follow down to the Gjettum subway station. From here, take the subway one stop to Hauger station.

Excursion of the week: Summit hike to the two Kolsåstoppene - hiking in the mountains.
Length: From Hauger to Søndre Kolsåstopp it is 1.2 km. From the top of Søndre Kolsåstopp to Nordre Kolsåstopp via Sætertjern, it is 4.8 km. Due to the climb, you will use approx. 3 hours to walk this entire distance of approx. 6 km. In addition, it is 4 km from Stein Gård to Gjettum subway station, which will take between 1/2 and 1 hour. You must therefore expect to spend 3.5 - 4 hours on this double summit tour.
Suitable for: Anyone in normally good physical shape. There are no dangerous sections, but the hike is long and the ascents can be tiring.
Getting there: From Oslo, take the Kolsåsbanen to Hauger subway station. If you drive, you can park at Hauger subway station. If you are accompanying and can use two cars, you can park one car at Hauger station and one car at the Guest Parking at Stein Gård. Then you avoid a few kilometers on a somewhat boring stretch of road.
