Skaugumåsen- summit hike in Asker

Updated: Aug 31

Skaugumåsen is located in Vestmarka in Asker, just east of Semsvannet and north of Skaugum farm. It is a popular destination and peak trip for the local population in Asker and the surrounding area. From the road around Semsvannet, a blue-marked path goes via Djupedalsåsen to the top of Skaugumåsen, where you get a nice view of Asker and the inner Oslofjord. You can also choose a more direct route, but it is steeper and more technically demanding and is not discussed here.

Park the car at the Semsvannet exit parking lot. Walk along the road (Holtmarks vei) in an east direction (towards Oslo) for a couple of hundred metres. When you reach Semsveien, turn left. After 50-100 metres, turn left again onto a dirt road that leads you to Sem Gjestegård.

Go through the yard and turn right at the parking lot. After a couple of hundred meters you come to Asker's center for nature, culture and health NaKuHel. There is a café here that is open every day from 11am to 3.30pm.

Continue on the dirt road past NaKuHel and turn left at the first crossroads. Follow the dirt road that runs along the Semsvannet until you after approx. 1 kilometer (1.5 kilometers from the car park) will come to a marked path on the right hand side which is signposted to Skaugumåsen via Djupedalsåsen.

The route is well marked. You first go through spruce and pine forest, then a section of birch forest and mixed forest.

Most of the route has a relatively steady climb on a pleasant forest path. On a small hill it can be tempting to use your hands to help, but it is only 20-30 metres.

After approximately 1.5 kilometers you reach a plateau. It is the top of Djupedalsåsen.

From here, the path goes slightly up and down a couple of times before you after approx. 1 kilometer reach the top of Skaugumåsen, which is 351 meters above sea level. From here you have a panoramic view of Asker and the archipelago in the inner Oslofjord. Then you have covered approx. 4 kilometers from the car park.

This week's excursion: Skaugumåsen via Djupedalsåsen - summit hike

Length: approx. 4 kilometers each way, 8 kilometers in total. It takes approx. 2-3 hours to walk without breaks.

Suitable for: Anyone in normal physical shape. There are no dangerous or frightening parts, but an ascent of 20-30 meters is so steep that it can be an advantage to use your hands to help.

Getting there: Plot the Semsvannet exit parking on Google Maps and park the car there. Alternatively: follow the E18 from Oslo towards Drammen. Take off from the E18 to Holmen a short distance before the exit to Asker. Turn right at the first roundabout and follow the signs to Sem Gjestegård/Sem utfartsparkering. You will be led past Skaugum farm to Sem utfartsparkering. If there is space available and the hotel does not need the parking spaces, you can also park in Sem Gjestegård's car park. Then the trip will be a few hundred meters shorter.
