In the summer of 2022, Strömstad Municipality invited the street art organization "Artscape" to paint artwork on selected facades and walls in the city. The participating artists came from all over the world, including Sweden. They were given free rein but were to be inspired by the theme "Man and the Sea" - a natural starting point for the shrimp town of Strömstad. The project resulted in eleven large, colorful paintings that now beautify the city.

Most people know the pier with the square and the Kosterbåtene, the small boat harbor and the large, old brick house with the green roof on the hill in the center of Strömstad. Those who have walked the streets of Strömstad may also know the picturesque, old wooden houses near the bus terminal and train station.

But if you haven't been to Strömstad in a while, you haven't noticed the new murals that are placed around the city. Between May 26 and June 8, 2022, the Artscape Lighthouse project brought together artists from all over the world to create artworks on vacant facades in the city. The paintings were to have the theme: "Human interaction with the sea". They can cover a large freestanding gable wall, part of a wall or surround a small house. The new artworks give you yet another reason to stroll around the streets of Strömstad.

The non-profit organization Artscape from Sweden has selected and mediated contact between the artists and Strömstad Municipality. Artscape aims to be a counterpoint to advertising posters and commercial decoration and to contribute to ordinary people having access to good art. They have anchored their work in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted by 193 countries in 2015, and believe that art is a valuable tool for achieving a sustainable world. They want to allow talented artists from diverse backgrounds to create high-quality artworks and want to show the public many styles and ways of expression. The organization was founded to change the Swedish perception of urban art. It brings together street art/street artists from all over the world.
