Cuevas de Canelobre Busot - cave with stalagmites and stalagtites

The cave at Busot has one of the highest vaults in Spain. It is 50 meters from ceiling to floor in the large cavity in the cave and another 20 meters up to the natural opening. Along the walls hang stalagtites which have taken nature more than a hundred thousand years to form. The cave is named after a large stalagmite shaped like a candelabra (candlestick) with three arms in the middle of the vault. There is also a group of stalagmites 25 meters high that have been named after Gaudi's church in Barcelona: Familia Sagrada.

The cave was discovered in the tenth century by the Moors. However, it was not used until the middle of the last century. In 1936, the Republicans used the cave to maintain aircraft engines. It blasted a 45 meter long tunnel to gain easier access to the great vault. It is the entrance that is used today.

They also made several platforms inside the vault. Most of these have been removed today, but the mounts for a couple of the platforms are still visible. You can also see how the blasting work destroyed part of the geological formations in the cave.

In addition to daily tours for the public, the vault is used, among other things, for concerts with up to 200 spectators. As a visitor, you can use the stairs down to the bottom and off the vault and from the main platform up to the natural entrance 20 meters higher up. Certain passages are also made available to those who practice speleology (exploration of caves) as a hobby. The total area for the vault and the cave passages is 80,000 square meters.
